I figured I might as well keep the birthday theme going all week long – it ties in to my mindset right now in preparing for C’s party on Saturday, and it fits perfectly with all the blog partying going on with the Ultimate Blog Party!

Last year we chose to do a Word World theme for J’s 2nd birthday. If you have small children and have never seen this show, you really ought to check your listings and find out when the next episode is so you can catch one. Brian and I tried to really limit how much TV J watched (we’re not doing so well the second time around!) but Word World was a show we felt really good about. It’s comprised of animal characters that are made out of the letters that spell their name, like this:

J has loved letters for a long time (along with songs like Twinkle Twinkle and Jesus Loves Me, we sing the ABC’s each night before he goes to bed, at his request) and we really think part of it is due to him watching Word World.

As I was saying before I got distracted, we decided to do a Word World party. I got online to see what plates and napkins were available, and found something pretty amazing: FREE Word World birthday party resources.

You can go here to check it out for yourself – they provide files for invitations, thank you cards, a birthday banner, and more. I was so impressed!

Here’s the birthday banner we printed out from the site. Each letter is on an individual page to cut out, and then I just secured them all to a strand of ribbon across our window. We had several Word World toys J had been given for his first birthday, so you’ll notice those hanging out in the window sill below the banner.

Here’s the cake I made. I used the Wilton Giant Cupcake pan and tried to model it after the cake Duck & Pig make for Frog in one episode. See how I piped “CAKE” around the base? It’s not my favorite cake I’ve ever made, but J was excited about it so I guess it served its purpose!

You can see some of the confetti I printed from the website. We bought plates and napkins online and other things at a local party store. That big bowl is filled with M&M’s and Skittles (get it? They have M’s and S’s on them, so I figured that went with the letter theme) , and I printed Word World labels to put on treat sacks for people to fill.

For C’s party I haven’t been able to find decor I just love. I bought some “First Birthday” napkins that have cars on them, which fits the theme, and I bought some solid colored items to fit with the napkins. I think I’m going to try and make a banner similar to the Word World one, but finding images of cars and trucks to help tie in the theme. I better get cracking – only four days to get everything ready!

Debbie, I’m so glad you liked the ideas! Word World is such a great show – it’s one of the few I don’t mind my boys watching quite a bit because they really do learn so much from it. Hope your son has a great third birthday party!
