House Calls via Technology with Doctor on Demand

Note: I participated in a Blog Blast Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Doctor On Demand. I received a free trial coupon code to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

We have three kids, and with kids come germs. As parents, you’ll inevitably end up having to take your children to the doctor at some point. But if you’re like us, you know it’s: a) difficult to find time to sit and wait for an hour or more to see a doctor, and b) a little disconcerting to sit in a room filled with germs as you wait!

Doctor On Demand is a healthcare service that solves both of those problems: it provides 15-minute Video Visits with board certified physicians, psychologists, and lactation consultants – and you can do it all from the comfort of your own home via smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.

All you have to do is download the Doctor On Demand app on a smartphone or tablet, or you can visit www.doctorondemand.com on your desktop computer. Just provide a list of symptoms, and you’ll instantly be connected to a provider licensed in your state for a video visit.

Guess what? Right now you can get your first visit free! Just use the coupon code NOVICE15 and you’ll be all set.

New Year’s Resolution Success with Kohl’s

Note: I received gift cards from Kohl’s to facilitate my post. All opinions are honest and my own.

I have a confession to make.

I’m pretty unoriginal with my New Year’s resolutions.

But, so far, I’m also pretty successful at keeping my resolution this year – so I guess in that way I’m fairly unique!

My resolution this year is to be healthier, which includes eating better and exercising more. I’ve tried this in the past and didn’t last long, but this time around I’m taking added steps to make sure I’m successful. I’ve found an app to help me track both calories consumed and burned; I’ve got an accountability partner (my husband – so convenient! And so amazingly awesome of him to agree to work out with me each night); and I’ve got the gear I need, thanks to Kohl’s.

I shop at Kohl’s pretty frequently for clothes, shoes, accessories, toys, and kitchen items. You probably do, too. But did you know Kohl’s has a pretty impressive line-up of items to help you live a healthier life?

Kohls_HealthStatement

There are a ton of options for workout gear – I personally think it’s a morale-builder to work out in something you feel attractive in; and if you feel attractive, you’re more likely to want to wear those clothes and work out in them.  Whether you’re a gym rat or you like to walk around your neighborhood, there’s attire for you.

Kohls_Womens-Workout-Clothes

Kohls-Tracksuits

Good shoes are crucial, and Kohl’s has plenty of those to pick from, too.

Kohls-NikeShoes

Don’t forget some headphones to listen to music while you work out!

Kohls_Headphones

They even have socks that wick away sweat, and I think we can all agree that’s a very good thing.

Kohls_Socks

Beyond clothing, though, there’s all sorts of exercise equipment, from weights to kettlebells to yoga blocks and more.

Kohls-Kettlebell

Kohls-Yoga-Kit

Kohls-Yoga-Block

And since you’ll be working up a sweat, you’ll want to make sure and stay hydrated. Kohl’s has got you covered there, too:

Kohls-WaterBottles

Of course, exercising is just part of living a healthier life. It’s important to make good choices with what you eat, too. There are a ton of kitchen gadgets on the market that make it fun and easy to eat healthy, and Kohl’s offers a wide variety to choose from. There were two items in particular I looked at – the Nutribullet Pro (how easy would it be to make smoothies with this?):

Kohls-MagigBullet

and this:

Kohls-Veggetti

You can make your own “noodles” out of veggies – too  cool! This would be a really fun way to give kids veggies, by the way. Or to lower your carb intake when it’s Italian night!

I decided to get something to help keep me accountable – a Fitbit Flex.

FitBit_Kohls

It’s been really great at motivating me to want to fit in as many steps as possible – and we got one for Brian, too, so we can challenge and encourage each other to stay active! Our Kohl’s had a kiosk right by the jewelry counter with the Fitbit Flex, Charge, Charge HR and Aria scale.

If you were thinking about making a resolution to live healthier, it’s not too late to start! It’s better to start a little later than not at all. Stop by Kohl’s and have a little healthy-living shopping spree. Get yourself shoes and workout clothes; find a DVD you can do right in your living room and grab a blender for smoothies in the morning. And if you get a Fitbit let me know so we can be friends and encourage each other!

Spread RSV Awareness in Honor of World Prematurity Day

Note: I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central forMedImmune. I received product samples to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

My kids are 7, 5, and 2 now but I can remember when they were each born like it was yesterday. I remember how tiny and fragile they seemed, and I definitely remember being incredibly cautious with them and germs the first few months of their lives.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a really common virus that occurs in epidemics each year, usually between November & March. Nearly all children contract it by the time they reach age 2 – I know all three of my children have had it! For babies that are healthy and full-term it can just cause moderate cold-like symptoms, which of course moms will still worry over.

RSV is the top cause of hospitalization for babies from birth to age 1 in the United States. About 125,000 babies are hospitalized with RSV each year,  and sadly up to 200 infant deaths. While every baby is at risk of contracting RSV, babies born prematurely have a much higher risk – they’re twice as likely as full-term infants to be admitted to the hospital for RSV-related symptoms.

One of my really good friends had premature twins in October several years ago, and I know they had to be extra-careful to keep their babies germ-free. My smallest baby was 6 pounds, 10 ounces, but seeing my friend’s preemies made me realize how much more fragile they are, and how important it is to protect them from diseases like RSV. World Prematurity Day is coming up on November 17, so this is especially on my mind right now.

Despite RSV being such a common disease, and potentially a scary one for preemies, one-third of mothers have never heard of the virus. I’m really glad to be able to help promote awareness and help other moms! Here are symptoms of severe RSV that you should keep an eye out for. If your child exhibits one or more of the following symptoms, be sure and contact your child’s pediatrician immediately:

  • Persistent coughing or wheezing
  • Bluish color around the mouth or fingernails
  • Rapid, difficult, or gasping breaths
  • Fever (especially if it is over 100.4 degrees F [rectal] in infants under 3 months of age)

Of course, preventative care is especially important too. There’s no way to avoid germs completely, and RSV is very contagious. It can spread very easily through touching, sneezing and coughing, and it can live on the skin and surfaces for hours. Here are some important things you can do to help minimize the spread of RSV:

  • Wash your hands and ask others to do the same (I kept hand sanitizer around for people to use along with washing their hands, just to be extra careful)
  • Keep toys, clothes, blankets & sheets clean
  • Avoid crowds and other young children during RSV season
  • Never let anyone smoke around your baby
  • Steer clear of people who are sick or who have recently been sick – even if they said it was just allergies, I liked to be cautious and still ask them to wait until they’re better before having contact with my babies.

My biggest tip? Don’t worry about what other people think of your caution. I would much rather feel silly for being over-cautious than end up with a severely sick child. And I’d rather hurt someone’s feelings by making them wait to hold my child. You’re your child’s best protector against RSV!

Living Proof: Perfect hair Day Update

Note: I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence central for Living Proof. I received product samples to facilitate my review and to thank me for my participation.

LivingProof-Products

A little over a month ago I told you how I was starting to use a line of hair care products from Living Proof called Perfect hair Day (PhD). I was only about a week in to using the shampoo and conditioner at the time, but I already knew I really liked  it.

Now that I’ve been using it day in and day out, I can definitely attest to the fact that it makes a difference. I’ve never been one to have great hair. It’s okay, but I’ve never had an easy time getting it to really look good. I have oily hair, which means I wash it daily, but then I end up with frizzy hair, which isn’t so great either!

I’m also not a person who has a lot of patience with styling my hair. I’m never going to be the girl that spends hours of time (or, let’s be honest, even one hour of time) on my hair, so I typically just blow dry it with a round brush and it ends up looking okay.

With the Perfect hair Day products, my hair looks sleek but not flat. It has body but isn’t frizzy. It’s a perfect balance that I’ve been trying to achieve for years, and I love it!

Here’s my routine: I wash my hair every day with the Perfect hair Day shampoo. It doesn’t make my hair frizzy at all (happy dance!!). I follow up with the conditioner, and once a week I use the Restore Mask Treatment.

After I let my hair towel dry a bit, I put on the Prime Extender and then the 5-in-1 styling treatment. I blow dry my hair with a diffuser and a round brush for about 10 minutes, and I’m golden!  Here’s my finished look:

LivingProof-HairFront LivingProof-HairBack

And here’s what my hair looked like before – much frizzier!

BeforeLivingProof

I love having a product on hand that gives me salon results for a fraction of the cost – and something I can easily keep up with on a regular basis. My husband and I recently celebrated our 11th anniversary, and it was nice getting to feel great out on our date night!

Brian_Christi_Sidebar

If you’re like me, a busy mom who wants to look her best without having to invest tons of (non-existent) extra time, Living Proof Perfect hair Day products are just what you’re looking for. And guess what?!

Now through November 8th, with an order of $20 or more, you can enter the exclusive code NOV2014 to get a free Perfect hair Day (PhD) 5-in-1 Styling Treatment in travel size. With this order you will also receive free samples and free shipping!

Don’t forget, you can keep up with Living Proof on social media, too! You can find them on:

Healthy Habits are Underway Thanks to LISTERINE!

Note: I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for LISTERINE. I received samples for this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.

Listerine_Products

Well, we’ve had our LISTERINE products for a while now and we’ve been integrating them into our oral care routine – and loving it. It doesn’t take much time at all to add Smart Rinse to what we’re already doing, and as a mom it makes me happy to know that the Smart Rinse is helping to clean all the germs the boys may have missed when they brush their teeth (let’s be honest; we all know that elementary-aged kids aren’t the most diligent brushers!).

The boys think the Smart Rinse is fun because it’s green and because it has the Avengers on the front of it, so it made it easy to introduce to them. Sometimes they (especially our oldest son) can be resistant to trying new tastes, but they both were open to using this and they like swishing it, too.

I love the floss for myself, because that’s one area I haven’t always been perfect about. I’m a twice-a-day brusher, but I know flossing is crucial for oral health – and LISTERINE has floss for virtually every type of mouth. The POCKETPAKS are another favorite of mine. They’re so easy to keep in my purse and pull out when I need them. They don’t just make your breath smell better, folks. They kill germs, so these are great to use after a meal or snack (and especially after sugar). The kids love them, too, because they think it’s magical how the strips dissolve on their tongues.

Have you tried any of these great LISTERINE products? Click here to find out where you can buy them, and you can visit the LISTERINE website, too, to find out more about what all they have to offer. And don’t miss the great Healthy Habit Heroes videos on the LISTERINE YouTube page!

Be a healthy habit hero and get your kids started NOW taking good care of their teeth. We talk to our kids about how important it is especially once they get their “grown-up” teeth, and we hope that we’re instilling habits that they’ll continue throughout their lives!

Heroic Habits with LISTERINE!

“I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for LISTERINE. I received samples for this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.”

Listerine_Products

Our family is still a relatively young family – our oldest son, J, is 7. C is 5, and E is 2. We’re loving this stage of life, but we’re also realizing that while they’re young it’s pretty crucial to set a good foundation for them in a variety of aspects of life! We want them to have manners, to share, to be thoughtful of others. And we want to teach them now how important it is to take good care of themselves, so that they develop good habits now that they continue as they get older.

Oral health is one of those areas that we really want to instill the importance of in our kids, and we work on making sure that it’s a standard part of their evening and morning routines. We buy fun toothbrushes for the kids – I think it’s worth splurging on to get them excited about brushing – and we make up little songs to sing to help pass the time.

But even beyond brushing we know it’s important to teach them about flossing, so we’re really excited to have the LISTERINE floss for them (and us) to use! The Gentle Gum Care floss is great for little mouths. It’s soft and springy, but still really effective at removing plaque from along the gum line. And I love the LISTERINE ULTRACLEAN EASY ACCESS Flosser for myself, because it can be difficult getting floss between those back teeth!

We’re also really glad to have LISTERINE SMART RINSE for the kids to use. Brian and I both use LISTERINE mouth wash, but it’s great to have for the kids too because you know they’re not going to always do the greatest job of brushing. The SMART RINSE helps get to all the areas of the teeth and gums, and the boys think the superhero graphic on the front is pretty awesome.

LISTERINE POCKETPAKS are another product I love for our family’s oral health. They’re not just breath fresheners, friends. They actually kill 99% of germs! They’re easy to keep in my purse for whenever we’re out and about.

How do you teach good oral health to your kids? Have you started them flossing and using mouth wash yet? If you haven’t yet, I urge you to start great oral health habits now – be a healthy habit hero! Click here to see where you can find LISTERINE products near you, and be sure to check out the Healthy Habit Heroes video series too!

Living Proof That You Can Have a Perfect Hair Day

Note: I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Proof. I received product samples to facilitate my review and to thank me for my participation.

JenniferAniston-LivingProof

Jennifer Aniston is one of those people whose hair just always seems perfect. I can’t imagine her ever having a bad hair day, can you? Of course, I’ve always thought it’s because she has a team of stylists. I didn’t know she also had an arsenal of hair care products that I can get my hands on, too! She’s co-owner of a hair care company called Living Proof.

LivingProof-Products

When my Living Proof Perfect hair Day (PhD) products arrived, I couldn’t wait to give them a try! I’ve never had the best luck with my hair. My roots get oily really quickly, which means I end up washing my hair every day, but then my hair can end up dry and frizzy, which is a problem on the opposite end of the spectrum. Frustrating!

The new PhD (Perfect hair Day) line includes a shampoo, conditioner, and 5-in-1 Styling Treatment. I like that it all works together, because if you’re using products from different lines you never know how they’ll work together (or against each other). The PhD products work seamlessly to treat and style hair. They deliver smoothness, volume, conditioning, strength, and polish all in one product set.

As someone who, like I mentioned above, has to wash my hair daily, I’m also excited to learn that the PhD shampoo shampoo and conditioner keep hair cleaner longer, which means it’ll reduce the need to wash my hair as often. I also love that they’re sulfate-free, oil-free, and silicone-free. I feel really good about using these products on my hair!

I’m really liking the 5-in-1 Styling Treatment, too. It’s easy to put it on my hair right after I get out of the shower, and with my blowdryer and a round brush I’m able to achieve a nice, sleek style. The styling treatment also has heat protection, UV protection, and static control – and it’s oil-free and silicone-free, too!

Take a look and see how Living Proof Styling Treatment can work for you, thanks to Jennifer Aniston’s stylist:

I’ve noticed that my hair feels thicker and does stay clean longer between washings, and I’ve only been using the Perfect hair Day line for a week!  I’m really looking forward to seeing how it goes over the next few weeks, and onward.

Do you want to see a change in your hair? I hope you’ll take the Living Proof hair challenge with me by trying out the great products – and you can sign up to win a set of PhD products on their site, too! Just click here to enter.

Be Prepared for Emergencies: National Preparedness Month Tips from Energizer #PoweringSafety

Note: This post was brought to you by Energizer, in partnership with The Motherhood.

nationalpreparednessmonthlogo

 EnergizerLogo

This month is National Preparedness Month, which is something I’ve thought about quite a bit over the years. Living in Texas, we get our fair share of storms and I’ve always made it a priority to think ahead and be prepared just in case. In case you haven’t thought about being prepared for a disaster, Energizer has shared some great tips for being ready for a natural disaster or other emergency:

  1. Create a plan. Have a plan with your family for what to do before, during and after severe weather. Make sure to practice your plan so you are ready for any situation.
  1. Keep a portable light in every room: When power goes out, you don’t want to go digging through closets or drawers looking for that flashlight. Energizer portable lights ensure you’re ready for any situation:
  • Weatheready®– Long lasting, practical solutions designed to keep you and your family safe during a weather emergency
  • Fusion Flashlights and Lanterns – Compact and versatile, Energizer® Light Fusion Technology products are compact, water resistant and provide impressively bright long lasting light
  • Headlights – Energizer’s powerful LED headlights are lightweight and versatile – perfect for keeping your hands free during an emergency situation
  1. Designate a place to seek shelter. Designate a meeting place for your family to take shelter. A basement or the smallest, most-interior room on the lowest floor is safest for severe weather and tornados. In the event of a tropical storm or hurricane, evacuate the area if instructed by local authorities.
  1. Make an emergency kit. Keep an emergency kit stocked with bottled water, canned food, copies of vital information, a first aid kit with prescriptions and an Energizer® Emergency Weather Station, which acts as a light, radio and charging station.
  1. Check social media for updates. Oftentimes communications can be limited during severe weather. Social media can give you the most up-to-date information from local government agencies and news outlets.
  1. Charge your devices. Make sure to charge cell phone and ensure that your radio and flashlight have fresh batteries. Energizer® MAX® with Power Seal Technology are long-lasting and are no leaks guaranteed.
  1. Stock your vehicle. Don’t be caught unaware in your car during a severe weather situation. Make sure to have an emergency kit with the essentials in your vehicle.

Some people may think it’s pointless to prepare, because the likelihood of something going wrong is pretty slim. I’d say, though, that being prepared is easy, so why not be prepared just in case? I’d much rather be prepared and not need it than desperately need it and not be prepared.

I hope you’ll also join me and other bloggers for a one-hour Twitter party on September 23 at 12 p.m. Central – Follow with the hashtag #PoweringSafety and keep an eye out for my tweets from @FrugalNovice!

Be sure and follow Energizer on Facebook, too, so you can keep up with their latest!

A Promise to Baby – and YOU – from Johnson’s Baby

Note: This post was written in partnership with The Motherhood & JOHNSON’S® Baby.

JohnsonsBabyProducts

I can vividly remember using JOHNSON’S Baby Shampoo all throughout my childhood, so it only seemed natural that we’d use it on our children, too – it’s a classic! However, although they’ve been around for a long time, some moms expressed concern about the ingredients in the JOHNSON’S Baby products. Because they care so much about moms, they made the decision to stand up and change their product formulas – not because of safety, but for peace of mind.

As the new reformulated products hit shelves, they are launching a heartfelt campaign called “Your Promise is Our Promise” as a way to express ongoing commitment to moms. Just as moms make promises to their children, JOHNSON’S Baby also makes promises so moms don’t have to worry about the products they use on their little ones.

To share this commitment, they’ve created an inspiring story through the “Our Promise” video, which can be viewed on YouTube, as an open letter to moms. The video shows their scientists and the scientists’ families coming together to build an origami stork mobile, symbolizing the delivery of their promise to always listen to moms.

This video concept was inspired by a Japanese legend that folding 1,000 origami cranes will result in a wish granted and a promise fulfilled, which is thought to be a big labor of love.

Changing their products was their labor of love for moms and babies, but they used storks in their video because they represent the delivery of babies, and the hopes and promises of families.

I love this video; I think sometimes it’s easy to think of companies as these faceless entities, but this is a reminder that the people that work for JOHNSON’S are moms and dads, aunts and uncles – and they care about their kids, and understand how much we care about ours. I promise, as a mom, to help my kids grow, to love them unconditionally, and to keep them safe. I love knowing that JOHNSON’S Baby understands that, respects it, and honors it with their updated products.

  • The JOHNSON’S® Baby Family is excited to introduce you to our seven newly reformulated products:
    • JOHNSON’S® Baby HEAD-TO-TOE® Wash
    • JOHNSON’S® Baby Lotion
    • JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo
    • JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo & Conditioner for Thick and Curly Hair
    • JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo & Conditioner for Thin and Straight Hair
    • JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo with Calming Lavender

Take a Moment for Mesothelioma

Note: this is not a compensated post – I’m sharing it because I think it’s important information.

I’m a big fan of DIY projects; in fact, we made quite a few updates to our old 1970’s home. If you’re working on older homes, however, it’s incredibly important to be aware of potential hazards, like lead paint or asbestos.

When Cameron St. James emailed me asking if I’d help with Mesothelioma awareness on my blog, I was moved by his wife Heather’s story of survival and wanted to do my part to spread the word. Here are a few facts you ought to know, and a guest post from Cameron below.

Mesothelioma

Heather Von St. James, a 9-year survivor of mesothelioma has made it her mission to spread awareness of the disease. When she was 9 years old, Heather experienced second-hand exposure to asbestos fibers on her dad’s work jacket. Once she was diagnosed, she was given 15 months to live. After beating the odds, herself and her husband Cameron hope to spread awareness of the disease.

Every year, about 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Symptoms generally don’t appear until 30-60 years after expose to asbestos, most people diagnosed with mesothelioma are given only 10 months to live.

Asbestos is found in common building materials that are used as insulation and adhesives. Asbestos was once used in the construction of many schools, homes, commercial buildings and naval ships especially during the industrial revolution. If these building materials are damaged or broken down, the deadly fibers become airborne and it is possible to inhale them.

Once the asbestos fibers are inhaled, they become lodged in the lung or heart tissue and cause inflammation and cancerous cell growth. About 40 percent of mesothelioma patients survive their first year after diagnosis, and only 10 percent of people living with mesothelioma survive 5 years after diagnosis.

The most susceptible groups of people to first-hand asbestos exposure are those who work in construction, around shipyards or aboard navy vessels. Second-hand exposure is also possible if clothing or items that have asbestos fibers on them are brought home and touched or washed by a family member. No amount of asbestos exposure is safe, but it is still not banned in the US and exists in the buildings that we live in every day.

The best way to keep your family safe from asbestos and mesothelioma is to have asbestos inspection and abatement carried out by trained professionals.
