I found this meme and thought it’d be a fun one to participate in. After all, I can think of plenty of things I <3 LOVE <3 and would like to share! The one for today came to me immediately, because I was just going on and on about it to Brian the other day. And the best part? It cost $2.
Yep, that’s right, people. One of my very favorite kitchen items cost a measly $2. I’ll show you a photo first – see if you can figure out what it is:
Most of you probably know – it’s a pot strainer, and I am in love with this little piece of plastic. I have been frustrated with colanders for a while now. Little pieces of food always seem to get stuck in the holes, and I can never justify washing them in the dishwasher because they take up as much space as several bowls or plates, so I always end up grumbling as I wash them by hand.
We went to Target (I also LOVE Target, but that’s another post entirely) to look for a smaller colander that might be easier to clean, when I saw the pot strainer. I figured with it costing so little, it was worth the risk to give it a try. It works like a breeze! I’ve used it on two different sizes of pots so far and it’s been fine with both. I just hold each side down with a potholder (since I inevitably touch the pot a little too), and voila! Water is strained, the food is still in the pot (taking away another unfortunate side effect of colanders – water dripping during transfer of the food), and I am left with one tiny piece of plastic to clean – or put in the dishwasher. It takes up the same amount of space as a plate, so I don’t have space-wasting guilt.
Here’s a shot of this life-saver on our pasta pot from dinner tonight:
I’d definitely recommend you add this to your arsenal of kitchen tools. What’s something you love to use in your kitchen?

I am a wooden spoon junkie! I love them, and use them for everything! I hate having to find a plastic spoon for this pan and a metal spoon for that one! It’s really annoying. I may have to look into the strainer, we was ours (we have 2) several times a week! And you’re right – WHAT A PAIN!

That looks like a super handy strainer! I’ll have to look for one the next time we’re at Target. Like you I hate washing colander’s. Their so bog and bulky. The stainless steel kind are MUCH easier to clean than the plastic ones though. Thanks for sharing this handy gadget! (Following from FFF at MBC)
