1998 – Frugal Novice

1998 was the year Brian and I met. We were both sixteen. He, his mom and his sister were new to our church, so my friend and I invited him and another new kid to come over to my house with some other friends after church one evening. They shot us down! They told us they already had plans, so we told them bye and headed toward our cars. Suddenly, a woman strode up behind us. “Hi, I’m Michelle. My son and his friend DO want to come over tonight.” Yup, that’s right. Brian’s mom had to force him to hang out with me at first. Ahhh, true love. :)

He and I quickly became friends, despite apparent differences. I actually had a boyfriend at the time, but soon after that relationship ended (and had been headed that way for a while, really) and we started “going out” October 18. We decided this through Instant Messenger, by the way. Cool, I know. We talked online all the time, which gave us a great chance to get to know a lot about each other.

I’m sure some people thought we were an odd couple from the surface – he dyed his hair blue, wore JNCO’s, and was incredibly quiet. Then here I was, blonde hair, GAP clothes head to toe, and, um, a little bubbly. And talkative. But something just clicked, and we knew we were a good fit together.

So, here we are thirteen years after having started dating, and eight years after getting married, and I still love looking back on how we got our start. We were just kids when we started dating, and have changed so much since then, but our relationship has only gotten better. I’m so very thankful to have him as my partner in love, in parenting, and in life.
