Health Awareness

As I get older, it becomes more and more important to me to be health conscious. It seems like it’s more common to talk about various awareness campaigns for conditions – I see posts on Facebook all the time for things like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. I don’t know if I see it a lot because my friends are getting older too, or if there really is just a rise in health awareness overall.

We have a friend who started developing diabetes symptoms a while back – he has since taken control of his health, gotten in shape, and now he doesn’t have the symptoms any more! It was an inspiration to me that we can all take action to be healthier people.

Even for people living with diabetes or some other condition, there are so many things you can do to make yourself as healthy as possible and lessen the strength of symptoms. How “health aware” are you?

Being Prepared

When I go grocery shopping, I try to plan at least a week in advance. Before we had kids, when I had more time to be organized, I could even get two weeks’ worth of groceries taken care of in one shopping trip. Of course, if we had more space for food storage that’d help! One day I hope to have a large pantry so I can have more long term food storage. I love the idea of having ingredients on hand to be able to prepare something on the spot if guests are coming over, or if I don’t have time to run to the grocery store. Another aspect I’ve thought of is planning for emergencies. In the part of Texas we’re at, we don’t have a threat of hurricanes or earthquakes, but I still think it’s wise to have emergency food on hand. One day maybe I’ll have the space to be as prepared as I’d like to be!

How much food do you store on a regular basis? And how often do you go grocery shopping? What are your favorite foods to have on hand for when company shows up unexpectedly? I’d love to hear!

Food for Intergalactic Travel

Yes, that is by far the most random post title on my blog. Do you know what I’m referring to, though? Astronaut food! Brian and I were talking about this just the other day. And, okay, astronaut food isn’t the technically correct term. Whatever you call it, freeze dried food is pretty amazing. I remember getting to sample some as a child and thinking it was so cool!

Nowadays, though, freeze dried food is for more than just the few people partaking in space travel. It’s great food insurance for any natural disaster, and an important part of emergency preparedness kits. For people in earthquake or hurricane zones, these kits can provide food for days and last for a really long time.

Someday I’m sure the boys will have the chance to try “astronaut food” and I hope they’ll think it’s as cool as I once did!

Out of Print Coasters Add a Fun Touch to Home Decor

Brian and I love to read,  so we totally got a kick out of the coaster set from OutOfPringClothing.com. This set provides a nod to eight literary classics, including one of my favorite, Pride & Prejudice!

Even the packaging alone on the coasters is clever – it looks like a canvas-wrapped hardback book with a belly band. Love it! When the coasters are stored in the case, they become the pages of the book.

The coasters are water-resistant and make a graphic statement. They’re also a great conversation starter, since most people will have read a lot of the books referenced on the coasters.

These coasters would make a great stocking stuffer for any book lover, or even just anyone who likes pops of color in their home decor. You can buy the coasters here – they retail for $20.00. They also have tote bags, phone cases, clothing and more!

Note: I received a set of the coasters for review. All opinions are honest and my own. I was not compensated monetarily for this post.

How Are You Saving Money This Holiday Season?

SELECT post_id, meta_key, meta_value FROM wp_postmeta WHERE post_id IN (5633,5635,5634) ORDER BY meta_id ASC

As I’m sure you’re aware if you’ve read my blog for any length of time, I’m a huge fan of coupons. Now that I do so much shopping online, I very rarely make a purchase without seeking out a coupon code. Recently I bought a gift for someone (I can’t tell you what it is, because that person reads this blog!) and I found a code that saved me $36.00. That kind of savings adds up quickly, and is something everyone should make a standard part of their online shopping, in my opinion.

CouponCodes4U is my new go-to place for coupons. It’s amazing to me the vast variety of stores and sites they have codes available for! And, for instance – I’m a huge fan of shopping on Black Friday. It’s the thrill of the hunt that I love… there’s just something about finding a bargain! CouponCodes4U has a whole section of codes that can be used for online Black Friday shopping, and you can do it in your PJ’s! They even have gift ideas (and coupons for them, of course). You can get deals on anything from jewelry to spa days for women, and from video games to Eurosport soccer gear.

Above is an example of one of their coupon entries. I really like the way the site is set up because you can easily scroll through to see what retailers have codes available, and then click ones that interest you to find out more information. The text in red makes it very clear when the deal expires, so you don’t inadvertently try a code that isn’t good anymore. I’ve had that happen to me with codes from other sites… it’s really frustrating when you think you’ve found a bargain and then it doesn’t work! With this site, though, it’s very obvious if a code is still good or not.

CouponCodes4U.com is a really useful site that I’d certainly keep bookmarked throughout the peak shopping season. You can even follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook to get updates on discount availability!
