I  awoke after a night interrupted many times by each of my children, and for some reason I had sleep on my mind. :) Here’s a fun collage of some “sleep” photos I’ve captured of the boys. If only I got as much sleep as they do!

Brian and I have had a lot of fun working on updating our house since we bought it a few years ago. We’ve replaced counters, appliances,  and a lot of the lighting. Our galley kitchen, for example, had a CEILING FAN. We quickly replaced that with some great track lighting. We also replaced the really outdated ceiling fixture above the sink with this cute pendant:

I love brushed nickel fixtures – I think they lend a clean, contemporary feel to a space – and the light that escapes out of the perforations creates a nice effect. Continue Reading…

Hi everyone! Did you have a good Mother’s Day? I had a really nice one – and got to take a two hour nap. Can’t get much better than that! Brian and the boys gave me this Willow Tree figurine:

Isn’t it perfect? The boys are just the right sizes to be J & C. And this is really a pretty familiar scene – me holding C and J right at my side (often whining for me to hold him too, ha). I know this figurine will be even more special as the boys get older, because it will bring back so many memories from when they were younger.

Ok, on to my menu for the week! It involves a couple of grilled items – we LOVE to grill out in the spring and summer! Continue Reading…

Friday Follow – Happy Mother’s Day!

I’ll be honest – it’s highly unlikely that I’ll post anything Saturday or Sunday – we have company coming, birthday parties to go to, errands to run, and heaps and HEAPS of laundry to do. So, I thought it would be nice to do a Mother’s Day post for Friday Follow. It’s especially fitting for blogland because my mom is the one who first encouraged me to start a blog aside from the family one I started after J was born. She blogs over at Healthy Home Blog and has since 2007, so she’s been able to give me a lot of advice especially as I start out.

Here’s a photo of the two of us together from a couple of weeks ago:

I mentioned in Monday’s post that we traveled with some of our friends this past weekend. We went to Lubbock for the guys to go to a concert, but while we were there we also spent a large part of our afternoon at a really great museum called the Science Spectrum, and we liked it so much that I thought I’d share a little about it.

We initially heard of this place because right now there is a LEGO exhibit (did I mention that Brian loves LEGOs? Yes, my 28-year-old husband. J loves them too – he inherited that love from Brian!) by an artist named Nathan Sawaya. Whether you like LEGOs or not, Sawaya’s work is pretty impressive – check out this life-size cello he created:

Five Valuable Blogging Resources

I’ve blogged for about three years now, ever since J was born. This blog is a more recent venture, and ever since I started it I’ve been really interested in finding ways to improve it. I’ve come across some great sites while searching for resources, and I thought today I’d share five of my favorites in hopes that these will be as helpful to you as they have been to me. If you’re not a blogger, you still might really enjoy some of these – especially this first one. Continue Reading…

Menu Plan Monday: May 3-8

I have to admit that this week’s menu was planned pretty hurriedly. We went out of town this weekend with some friends, and got back yesterday evening. It was a great trip. Our friends also have two small children – girls, though – and J and their older daughter had a blast playing together. J has decided recently that it’s fun to declare, “I want to play ROCK BAND!” over and over again (we don’t know where this came from; Brian plays Rock Band but J hasn’t “played” with him in months). When you picture this, you have to understand the way it’s said. He’s not whining (this time) – he bellows it out and really amps up the last two words of the statement. He apparently passed his love of saying this on to our friends’ daughter, because yesterday morning as we sat enjoying our continental breakfast they took turns shouting it back and forth to each other with huge grins on their faces. Ahh, the fun of toddlers.

Back to my point, though… we got back last night, and you know what comes with returning from a trip: a) tiredness; and b) unloading the car. Oh, and feeding two hungry little boys since we arrived at dinner time. By the time we got all settled in and had the boys ready for bed, I really didn’t feel like planning our meals for the week, let alone making a trip to the grocery store. If I waited until today to go, I’d have to take both boys with me, and that mental image was enough to get me motivated. I kept it simple this week. The good news is I also kept our grocery bill down  – $50 again this week!

When I’m out shopping (especially at antique or thrift stores) one of my favorite things to look for is glass containers of all shapes and sizes. I don’t even always have a use for them in mind, but I know I’ll find something perfect to use them for. I’ve done pretty well with restraining myself, but here are a few of the ones I’ve bought over the years.

Ok, well almost wordless (I’m not good at not saying anything). We took the boys to get their portraits made on Saturday and it went really well! J was actually the more cooperative of the two – because I told him he had a Cars sticker waiting for him at the end of the session. C was a little tired, but they both still did great. Here’s one that we got of them together – I love these boys!

Savvycents Wallet Giveaway!

Edited to add 5/7: We have a winner!

Congratulations, Natalie! If you’ll email me your address I’ll pass it on to Melinda so she can send you your Savvycents wallet. Thanks to everyone who entered… I’ll be having another giveaway on Tuesday so be sure and pop back in to enter that!

I’ve read several financial books in trying to figure out the budgeting system that would work best for our family, and one of the books I liked best suggested using an envelope system to keep track of cash for spending in various categories. Many of you probably know which book I’m talking about.

Melinda at Savvycents read one of these books and tried the envelope system herself, but quickly became frustrated with the envelopes and disorganization. She created a wallet to allow her to keep her cash in separate categories and also give quick access to everything else she needed. Continue Reading…

Menu Plan Monday – Cheap Week

We traveled this past weekend and have several other extra expenses coming up, so we kept our grocery bill low ($50! Woohoo! And that’s with medicine I had to buy for my insane allergies) this week. And we’re even having company over one night! I’m still planning on trying the fish suggestions Janalyn, Julie, and Susan recommended in the coming weeks and I’ll report back on how my experience goes – it’ll be the first time I’ve had fish in years. Anyway, on to our menu for the week: Continue Reading…
