Today’s Challenge: Your Day

A little vague, no? At first I thought about making this be my BIG day and sharing a couple of wedding photos with you, but then I realized that would mean hauling out my wedding album and scanning photos in. So instead, you’re going to get an idea of what an average day for me is like. I know, I know – thrilling. Try to contain your excitement. :)

I wake up in the morning around 6:45. Well, let me take that back – lately J has been coming in our room around 6:00, so from then until my alarm goes off, I get a little bit of dozing here and there. Then I hear my phone and hit the snooze once to feel like I’m pampering myself with 5 extra minutes of sleep.

We get our morning routine done pretty quickly, because I’d rather rush through the morning a little quicker than have to get up earlier. The boys and I head over to their day care, and of course every morning provides scenes like this:

Or, you know, not. Sometimes they’re all about being best buds. Other days we’re sleepy & we all just kind of stare out the window silently. And some morning there’s a lot of whiiiiiiiiiiining and I have the opportunity to work on my skill of tuning things out. The boys are both morning people, though, so mornings are good more often than not.

After day care I head to work. I don’t have any photos of my work area, but here’s the poster I have behind my desk – I love it!

I love typography (which most of you probably do not, so you’re probably wondering why on earth this poster makes me so happy) and had to get this for my space.

Brian comes and has lunch with me every day. Some days we’ll go out – lunch dates are always a treat – but most of the time we have something exciting like this:

After work I go pick up the boys, we all head home and then get dinner started. Bedtime for the boys is 7:30 (ish) and then Brian and I have some time to spend relaxing together, working on blogging or freelance, and getting ready for the next day. I stay up way too late almost every night, usually getting in bed around midnight (ish) where I watch a little HGTV and then CRASH. Ta-da! There’s my day in a nutshell. Or in a rambling post.

Chicken Wraps Recipe & Our Menu for the Week

Menu Plan Monday

We made two trips to Lowe’s this weekend, which can only mean one thing – a home reno project is right around the corner! Our master bath is sitting empty right now after being stripped down to nothing, and I’m really excited about fixing it back up again. I’ll be taking photos along the way and will post before and after shots once we’re done – we’re painting the walls, putting up wainscoting, tiling the floor, and putting in a new vanity, toilet & light fixture. I’m really glad Brian knows how to do so much. My contribution is just shopping, painting, and moral support.

This week I’ve got a new wrap recipe to share, courtesy of Frances – thanks for sharing, Frances! If you’ve got any recipes you think I ought to try, share them in the comments below. If you’ve got a blog, I’ll link to you along with posting your recipe.

Monday: Leftovers – Brian and I had a date out to Chili’s (which you’ll hear more about later… there’s a giveaway involved!) and we had enough food left over for us to have dinner. I’ll make some chicken, veggies and mac & cheese for the boys.

Tuesday: Chick Fil A family night.

Wednesday: Chicken teriyaki with veggies and brown rice

Thursday: Frances’ Chicken Wraps:

Ingredients:

  • 4 fillet chicken breasts that are then cut into strips (all the ingredients are to your liking)
  • Garlic powder (can use finely minced fresh garlic too)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • lemon juice (I usually use approx. 5-6 tbls … I like to use fresh squeezed)
  • dried basil
  • oil (Frances suggests approx. 1 cup, but you can adjust the amount if you’d like – I may add a little at a time until It seems like enough)

  • Salad:
  • diced tomatoes
  • cucumbers
  • green onion (can use yellow onion)
  • fresh parsley (can use dry)
  • Dressing for salad: in a cup mix equal parts of fresh squeezed lemon juice & olive oil (or you can use vinaigrette dressing)
  • Tortilla (or even a pita pocket!)
  • Shredded pepper jack & mozzarella

Directions:

  1. Mix chicken, garlic powder, salt, pepper, lemon juice, basil, and oil in a large bowl let marinate at least 30 minutes in fridge
  2. Saute above ingredients in a fry pan (you can add or substitute some butter if you like that flavor better than the oil)
  3. Mix the oil/lemon juice or dressing with the salad, and add salt & pepper to taste. Let marinate in the fridge to let the flavors meld.
  4. Sprinkle cheeses on tortilla and place in oven or toaster oven to melt it.
  5. Place chicken on 1/2 of the tortilla, then top with baby greens and the tomato/cucumber salad. Roll it up, cut, & enjoy!

Friday: Mexican lasagna from FoodNetwork.com

Saturday: Leftovers!

If you haven’t checked them out yet, I hope you’ll take a minute and see the giveaways I have going on right now – there are great items, and I’m excited to have some more really good giveaways to share with y’all this week. I’ll also be starting back up with the Photo & Prompt posts, which I’ve had a lot of fun with so far!

Hope you all have a wonderful week – don’t forget, if you have any recipes I should try share them in the comments!

I love my kids and have always loved the idea of wearing something that represents them. I’ve never been a big fan of traditional birthstone type jewelry, though. I recently got the opportunity to review a necklace that is a perfect option for moms today, from Henry & Stella designs.

Krystal, the owner of Henry & Stella, was a pleasure to work with. She interacts a lot with customers on Facebook, letting them know when their designs are ready, and her customer service is top-notch. But enough about that – I know you want to see the necklace!

Isn’t it pretty? I love the modern design – the names are stamped into a silver washer with two beads in the boys’ birthstone colors hanging into the center. I think this design is clean and timeless. I love that Henry & Stella designs are reasonably priced, too. This necklace retails for $40, where you’d find it for double that on many sites. Some people might want an actual birthstone, but for me I’d rather have a pretty necklace with an affordable price tag!

Wouldn’t you like to have a gorgeous necklace like this? Well, here’s some good news. You could…

One lucky winner will win a necklace like mine only, y’know, with your kids’ names and birthstones on it! This contest is open to all U.S. residents. Entries will be accepted until midnight CST on Monday, March 21.

“Like” Henry & Stella on Facebook, and comment here letting me know you’ve done so. I’d love for you to let them know that FrugalNovice.com sent you!

(Only valid after the required entry has been completed)

Please leave a comment for each extra entry – if you blog about this giveaway and get 3 entries, for example, comment 3 times.

Note: Henry & Stella provided me with a necklace for review and one for this giveaway. Any opinions provided in this post are honest and are my own.

Today’s Challenge: An experience that made me who I am today

Yep, you saw that right. A visit to Chuck E. Cheese’s changed my life.

I was in elementary school, and my Mema & Papa (mom’s parents) took me to Chuck E. Cheese one Friday night. I can still remember having a lot of fun – they completely spoiled me with plenty of pizza and tokens, and patiently followed me around playing games with me.

As it got later we decided to head back home. Mema, who might have weighed 95 pounds soaking wet, walked in front of me, and Papa followed behind us, having held the door open for us to walk through. We had barely taken a few steps out of the door when it happened. Suddenly Mema was shoved brusquely to the ground as a woman ripped her purse from her arm and took off around the corner to what we later found out was the getaway car. My grandfather followed after them, but seconds later I saw a car zoom by, out of the parking lot and away from us.

That one moment changed me. For years afterward I would always walk beside my mom or Mema on the side where their purse was, holding on to it and hoping to help prevent something happening again. I was suddenly cautious of the world, wondering who else out there might do something so cruel without a moment’s warning. I had nightmares, not of the purse snatching, but of some other faceless person coming to kidnap me.

The nightmares stopped, and I eventually stopped worrying about something happening again. It didn’t scar me – I’m a happy, optimistic person. I’m still fairly cautious to this day, though, and I’ll always wonder if part of it can be attributed back to that night.

Even though that experience was a horrible one for me at the time, what happened afterward affected me profoundly in a way for which I will always be thankful.

The purse snatcher was eventually caught and put in jail – I think some good Samaritan had followed the car and gotten the license plate that night, although I’m a little vague on exactly how she was caught. I remember feeling relief that she was behind bars, and a little vindication that she would be punished for what she had done.

Then I heard that Mema had gone to visit the woman. I couldn’t believe it – the idea of it was scary to me at the time. But what amazed my little elementary school self most was that Mema hadn’t gone to yell at her, or to enjoy the satisfaction of seeing her behind bars.

She went to offer forgiveness. And that simple act has stuck with me my entire life.

Executive Gift Shoppe Review & Giveaway

If you’re like me and always have a hard time shopping for the men in your life, then you’ll probably feel like I did when you first visit ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com – like you’ve struck gold (well, if gold=gift ideas). There are gifts ideas for women, too, and many of the items would work well for men or women.

When I got the opportunity to review something it was a lot of fun choosing something I thought Brian would enjoy. First I thought about getting him a case for his iPod, and then I got distracted looking at the cutting boards (I was almost tempted to get one of those “for Brian”). Finally I settled on a wallet, because Brian hasn’t gotten a new one since before we got married over 7 years ago.

There were a lot of wallets to choose from, but I pretty quickly settled on a leather bi-fold wallet with a money clip and outside pocket. The design is nice and sleek, and I could have it monogrammed with his initials.

The wallet arrived quickly and was packaged in a black gift box. Whether you’re ordering something as an individual gift, or a group of items as gifts for business associates, the presentation is really nice. The wallet itself is made of good quality leather and I think the personalization adds an extra special touch.

The wallet has a pocket on the outside, multiple pockets on the inside, and a money clip to keep cash handy.

Brian switched everything over and carried the wallet today. He says he really likes the thinner profile and having the outer pocket to keep things easily accessible.

Overall, I was impressed with the site, the quality of the wallet, and the speed of delivery. The only thing I would suggest for improvement would be more items for women, although I think the site as is fills a niche that’s needed – there are a lot more sites out there that focus on women’s gifts.

Want to do a little shopping for yourself or someone you love on ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com? One lucky reader will get a $25 gift certificate to spend on the site! The contest is open to all U.S. and Canadian residents. Entries will be accepted until midnight CST on Thursday, March 24.

It’s a Keeper was started in order to organize and share recipes collected from magazines, etc.  This blogger loves to cook, has actually collected 337 recipes, and is sharing them one by one.  Check out her recipes which are paired with great pictures!  (Her husband is the photographer behind her photographs.)  They have an energetic, nearly four year old son, and although she loves her job, she would really love to be a stay-at-home mom.

The Pretty Life Anonymous is written by two sisters, the Pretty Life Girls, who prefer to remain anonymous.   They are both married and like to find cheap, yet stylish, clothes.  One is a graduate student and one is an undergraduate student.  One can’t live without eyeliner and peanut butter.  The other has to have earrings and polished fingernails.  They share their stylish outfits with photographs.  Check out their cute wardrobe!

Ana Paula at Sweet Serendipity is a newlywed, married to her best friend.  Actually, they’ve been married over a year now.  She loves fashion, shoes,  vintage things, and chocolate, just to name a few.  Ana Paula finds great deals at thrift stores and shares those with her readers along with pictures.  Check out her cute wardrobe!  She currently has a Shabby Apple dress giveaway which ends March 10.

Now that you know about these 3 wonderful blogs, it’s time for you to join in! Add your family-friendly link below and we’ll see you back here every Friday! And don’t forget, you can get the InLinkz code to share the link list on your blog, too.

Today’s Challenge: My Favorite Shows

Ok, confession – we watch a lot of TV. I think part of it stems from the fact that, with two little boys who go to bed at 7:30, we’re home a lot. But to be honest, we watched TV a lot pre-kids, too. I like to rationalize that we save money this way – we’re not out going to the movies, or eating out, because our entertainment is right there in our living room. Don’t worry, I won’t take you through all gazillion of the shows I like, but here are a few:

Top Chef – Wednesday nights on Bravo: I’ve mentioned before that Brian and I love to cook, so I guess it should come as no surprise that we love this show. I like that it generally focuses more on talent and skill than behind-the-scenes drama you find so much in reality TV. It’s motivated us to try new foods, and Brian’s gotten interested in the science behind cooking – he’s trying to talk me into getting equipment to try sous vide cooking.

House Hunters on HGTV: I could list a LOT of shows from HGTV that I love, but this is probably my favorite. I was especially hooked when we were house hunting, too. Even now, though, I watch it almost every night before going to bed. I always like to try and figure out which of the three houses the people will pick, and it’s fun seeing how they change the house after moving in. I usually watch this one alone, but if I could ever get Brian into HGTV, this would be the gateway show.

The Amazing Race, Sunday nights on CBS: Ok, I just realized that all three shows I picked fall into the reality TV category (good reality TV, in my defense!) but almost all of the other shows we watch do not. Oh well… let’s pretend I chose this theme on purpose. Anyway, back to the show – I think I love this one because it lets me travel vicariously through these other people’s experiences. The show starts off with a group of teams, and slowly dwindles week by week down to three final teams that compete in the last leg for 1 million dollars. Along the way they travel to different countries (and continents), and are faced with challenges that often reflect local culture. It’s fun to find a time to really root for (or against) and follow the adventures from week to week.

What are your favorite shows?

Today’s Challenge: The People That Make My World Go Round

If I really wanted to share everyone that means a lot to me, it’d take me a lot to find photos of everyone. We’ve been blessed with loving families and friends (you know who you are!) that really do mean the world to us. Today, for the sake of keeping this from going on forever, I’ll just write about my three guys.

Brian is amazing. Seriously, wonderful. He’s supportive of all my endeavors – even this crazy blogging stuff! – and is my go-to for critiques and opinions. He is patient with our children, and a true partner in every sense of the word. We tell each other everything and he is truly my best friend (and has been for almost 13 years). He takes up my slack when I need it – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to bed after a stressful day and wake up the next morning to a clean kitchen! I am immensely blessed to have found him and snagged him for my own. :)

J makes me laugh every single day. Sometimes it’s in disbelief at his stubbornness, but mostly it’s the quirky things he says or the funny observations he makes. He’s also quick to tell all of us how much he loves us all “because we’re a faaaaaaaamily and we love each other no matter what!” He amazes me at the things he knows and remembers, and it’s a blast seeing him learn new things all the time.

C is a sweetheart. He’s at a snuggly stage right now and is always asking to be held or cuddled. He toddles around all over the house following after one of us (mostly after J), and seeing his little wobbly run down our hallway always makes me smile. He loves to eat and one of his favorite things to snack on is raw onions, so when I’m in the kitchen working on dinner he’s often there with me asking for little bits of the veggies as I prepare them. He is less and less a baby every day, and although I’m a little sad for that stage to pass, I love how he and J play together and how he can do so much more with us as a family.

I love my little family!

Review – Peter Rabbit Organic Veggie Blends

We’re out of the baby food stage (for now, anyway) but I can still remember being on the hunt for good quality, nutritious, healthy food choices for both of the boys when they were first starting out eating solids. We, like every other parent, wanted to provide the best for them especially as they were starting out.

Peter Rabbit Organics are made from pure, organic vegetables and fruit, and their BPA-free pouches have no added sugar, preservatives and absolutely nothing artificial. I got the chance to review three flavors:

  • Sweet Potato, Corn, and Apple
  • Pea, Spinach, and Apple
  • Carrot, Squash, and Apple

The flavors of the food were nice and bright, and the apple in each of the combinations added a sweetness that I think would make the food more appealing to infants. The pouches were really easy to use, but might take some getting used to for really little ones!

You can buy these pouches on Amazon or can find them in Babies R Us or in some Starbucks, among other locations.

Note: I received the pouches of baby food to sample & review. All opinions provided in this email are honest and are my own.

Wordy Wednesday – March 2

WordPress database error: [Table './quadium_wrdp27/wp_postmeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]
SELECT post_id, meta_key, meta_value FROM wp_postmeta WHERE post_id IN (2200,2273,2272,2274) ORDER BY meta_id ASC

If you read my blog last week, you saw my first installment of Wordy Wednesday. I had initially planned to use this just for myself, but my mom suggested I try adding a link-up just in case other people want to give it a try. So, while I’m fully prepared for her to be the only name on the list :) I’d love for you to join in – if not this week, maybe the next!

Wordy Wednesday is pretty simple. Post a photo, but instead of leaving readers to wonder what the back story is, talk about what’s going on in the photo, or tell a story that’s related somehow (or not – being random is fine! Just be sure & share something you think your readers would be interested in). Pretend you’re gabbing with a friend!

Speaking of gabbing, here are my photos for the week:

As you can tell, when my family goes to Target, we don’t just shop. The boys love going to Target (which may be a testament to how little there is to do in our city, or how, ahem, boring we are) and I have to admit it’s a fairly common occurrence. We have a route – yes, a set path we take almost every time we go, strategically planned to start with what we want to look at and end with toys & then books. Sometimes we get an ICEE & popcorn, which the boys think is a huge treat. We love it because they’re in better moods and we’re able to meander through the store without worrying (as much) about a breakdown.

When we go, we usually have a shopping list but we also always check out the various clearance spots throughout the store. Brian used to not really care about it but ever since he found this bargain he’s been hooked. We’ve found a GeoTrax train set for $9.99 that usually retailed (and did again the following Christmas) for $39.99, and I’ve been sucked into buying a few kitchen gadgets I didn’t really need every once in a while.

Even if going to Target for a family outing is a little less-than-exciting, we always have fun browsing the clothes, toys, and electronics. And maybe trying things on every once in a while, too.

Before I sign out, I have to share a quote from J that just took place a little before writing this post. Random, I know… that’s why I threw that part in about randomness being ok – I’m the queen of random.

Brian and I take turns sitting with the boys a little after they get in bed. Ever since I was sick with the flu, J has especially favored Brian. I’ll admit my mom ego took a little beating, but I’m hanging in there. Well, tonight Brian was busy so I sat with the boys for a little bit. J said, “Mom, I really want Dad in here,” so I asked him why. He said, “I just like Daddy better than I like you.” OUCH! I tried not to react but I guess he figured out that wasn’t the best thing to say, so he quickly added, “I mean, I like you too. You’re nice and cute. I just like Dad better.” Niiiiiice.

**********************

Ok, it’s your turn! If you feel like being a little wordy and/or a little random this week, write your post and link up below. If you want to host the link up too, just go here to get the code. The list will be open until midnight on Wednesday. Have a great week, everyone!

Photo & Prompt Challenge – Day 1

WordPress database error: [Table './quadium_wrdp27/wp_postmeta' is marked as crashed and should be repaired]
SELECT post_id, meta_key, meta_value FROM wp_postmeta WHERE post_id IN (2119) ORDER BY meta_id ASC

Today I’m participating in something new from It’s Gravy, Baby! The idea is that every day in March, participants share a photo and write from a provided prompt. I’m not promising I’ll stick to it every day, but I’ll try – I like the idea of having something to inspire a post, and to sometimes force me to write/share outside of my comfort zone a little bit.

Today’s Challenge: A photo of yourself with 10 facts

  1. I hate having my photo taken. I would MUCH rather be behind the camera, taking photos of my two boys or my miniature dachshund.
  2. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, who, in high school, regularly dyed his hair completely unnatural colors (I think he had it green for the longest period of time). I, on the other hand, worked at the Gap. Somehow we found middle ground :) and we make a great team.
  3. I knew Brian was “the one” and wrote him a letter to read on our wedding day four years before we actually got married. I hung on to it even through a brief 4-month break-up, and loved giving it to him to read that day.
  4. I’m a Christian and my faith is a central part of my life, especially in raising our boys. I believe in sharing my faith largely by how I live and how I treat others.
  5. I was born and raised in Texas, but am not a “Western” girl at all. I’ve ridden a horse a handful of times, but I think it was as novel to me as it’d be to someone from NY! I do not own a pair of cowboy boots, and never have. I loved growing up here, though, and love living here now with our kids.
  6. I am scared of flying, and have been for years. I haven’t flown in over 10 years, but want to fly somewhere with my family soon because a) I know the boys will love it and b) I don’t want this fear to hold us back from having great experiences, or spread to the boys. I’m also scared of elevators. I ride in them, but my heart races every. single. time. Even if it’s just from floor 1 to floor 2.
  7. I LOVE to cook. LOVE it. I’m really glad Brian loves it too, because it’s a lot of fun to do together.
  8. I’m kind of a picky eater, though. I don’t like any seafood that I’ve tried, and don’t like many veggies, either… although I’m getting better about trying and liking new things!
  9. Prior to having my kids I wanted a girl. Would’ve been happy with either, but I thought that’s what I was suited for. Now that I have my boys it feels like a perfect fit and I love being a mom to boys!
  10. I was at my first job for seven years, and just made the switch to a new job this past summer. It was more than a little nerve wracking to make such a big life change, but it has most definitely been the right decision for me and for our family. Now I’m a designer and get paid to be creative. :)
